Adult Swim's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Major Renewal for Two More Seasons.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often defined by bleakness, this show's earnestness found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and supported its uniquely offbeat style.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about watching this endearing family navigate their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to help comedy break out of its prevailing sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
The Path Forward
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially help usher in that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to enjoy the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
