We are analyzing video footage and photographs shared earlier today that depict the aftermath of a alleged car bomb blast that Russian officials say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died of his wounds. An investigation is under way.
Our starting point to verify the location from which the pictures were from was based on posts indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building seen in the footage.
Identifying additional structures, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
