NY Launches Reporting Tool for Citizens to Share Immigration Videos Following Arrests of Four US Citizens
New York state AG has rolled out a new reporting form urging citizens to submit photos and videos of ICE operations around the state. This step follows a shortly after a major ICE raid rattled Manhattan's Chinatown, triggering widespread protests.
US Citizens Arrested During Enforcement Action
A US congressman revealed during a midweek briefing that four American citizens were detained and detained for "nearly 24 hours" following the enforcement action. Demonstrations erupted in New York on consecutive evenings.
"Each citizen deserves to exist without intimidation," state officials stated in a statement.
"Anyone who observed and documented ICE activity during the raid, I ask you to provide that evidence with my office. We are committed to examining these submissions and investigating any violations of law."
Submission Process
The form provides options to send images and video footage of the operation, along with a field to indicate where it occurred. When submitting, users must mark a box that confirms that "authorities may use any materials, images, or footage in a public document, such as in a lawsuit or official statement."
Details of the Manhattan Operation
The enforcement action, which onlookers say involved more than 50 federal agents, took place in a well-known area of NYC where counterfeit purses, items, goods and additional items are sold daily en masse – frequently to tourists.
Footage of the operation depict numerous covered and weaponized officers restraining and arresting a man, and shoving away onlookers. Masses of locals followed the personnel along the roads. An armored military vehicle was observed moving along the urban roads.
Leadership Statements
During a Wednesday press conference featuring the rights organization, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democrat, announced that four nationals were arrested by immigration for almost a full day and that there were "no situations where US citizens should be detained for without cause." He said the citizens were let go on the following day with no legal action taken.
"The goal is evident here. It is not about removing offenders," Goldman remarked. "This constitutes a military-style operation to incite tension. It is simply a pretext to generate turmoil for federal officials to utilize the armed forces to stop violence that they initiated."
Broad Criticism
Anger over the immigration operation escalated – each of the NYC mayor hopefuls criticized the incident, along with Governor Kathy Hochul.
"Once again, the Trump administration chooses oppressive displays that generate terror, instead of protection. It must stop," one mayoral candidate stated.
NYC community groups voiced concern also.
"Immigration agents targeted the neighborhood with armored transports, covered personnel and protective equipment to target street vendors trying to make a living. This operation had no relation to citizen protection and everything to do with intimidating residents and areas," said the president of a advocacy group.
ICE Policies
ICE policy forbids the arrest of American nationals and the organization has said it does not take into custody US citizens. Nevertheless, external research has revealed that over 170 US citizens have been held against their will by ICE during the period of the existing leadership.
Current Situation
ICE raids have been becoming more common in the state and around the country this year.
A recent action in the city center was the earliest reported action on an housing center of the existing leadership. Demonstrations opposing ICE are commonplace including allegations of violence and cruel conditions.
Recently, a submission submitted by legal entities alleged inadequate care of expectant mothers in ICE facilities.
