The Eurovision Song Contest Was Once a Campy Joy – However It Has Evolved Into a Cynical Way to Sanitize Conflict.

An freshly coined initialism surfaced a couple of months after the start of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Referred to as WCNSF, it means “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This term is unique to Gaza, per insights from medical experts like paediatricians. Typically, it is rare for physicians to care for a child who has been bereaved of their complete family. But, there has been no semblance of normality about the genocide in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been eradicated and the number of child amputees surpasses that of any other region in the world. Nothing normal about numerous doctors arriving back from a landscape of rubble with reports of children being deliberately targeted.

A Living Nightmare Regardless of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Vital medicines and equipment are not getting in those in need, and major human rights organizations have stated that genocidal acts are ongoing. Officials disputes these allegations, consistent with how it disavows everything it is accused of. Meanwhile, while grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its professed goal of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” The contest will continue to offer a blood-red carpet for Israel, even though at least four European countries have now boycotted in dissent. And this, we are told, is what international harmony resembles.

Historically, Eurovision prohibited Russia from competing in 2022 due to the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza is completely different.

A Double Standard

Forget the fact that Israel was alleged to have used questionable voting tactics last year in what seems to have been an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Set aside the news that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza recently. Forget the fact that aggression from Israeli settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that foreign reporters are still prevented from freely reporting in Gaza. None of this, it would seem, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy

The contest marks seven decades next year – almost double the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza at present. The event will proceed, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the pure, unadulterated fun it was formerly known for. An institution that once promoted togetherness has transformed into a transparent instrument to sanitize military aggression.
