The King's Historic Scoring Streak Comes to a Close, But Lakers Pull Off Win Against Toronto.
James understood his historic run of scoring in double figures was at risk. When it mattered most, though, he wasn't bothered.
The right decision involved passing the basketball – so he did. With that selfless act, the legendary streak finished.
LeBron's unprecedented streak of 1,297 consecutive NBA regular season outings scoring at least ten was snapped during a recent game, when the NBA's all-time scoring leader finished with a mere eight points during the Los Angeles Lakers' close triumph versus Toronto. He delivered the clutch helper, setting up teammate Rui Hachimura to hit a three-pointer to win the game.
“Nothing,” James replied when asked on the record concluding. “We won.”
An Unselfish Play Secures Victory
James could have attempted to win the contest – and extended the streak – with the last shot, instead, he decided to pass to Hachimura in the left corner. Hachimura sank it, and James raised his arms triumphantly.
“Just playing the game the right way. Always make the right play,” James noted. That has always been how I operate. That’s how I learned the game. That's what I've done my whole career.”
He is acutely aware exactly how many points he's scored at all times,” said Lakers coach the coach. He made the play as he has done countless times.”
The Run's Final Moments
James re-entered the floor for the final time with 5:23 remaining, the result along with the historic run on the line. He had only six points on a 3-for-15 performance by that point.
He got a bucket with under two minutes remaining to level the contest then missed a 14-footer at 1:01 left that might have taken him into double figures.
He avoided taking a subsequent shot – but could have. Austin Reaves gave James the ball with a few seconds left, yet LeBron chose to make the extra pass instead.
The basketball deities, if you approach it the right way, they often reward you,” the coach concluded.
A Look Back at an Unparalleled Run
This incredible run began back in January 2007. It stood as the most extended double-digit streak in professional basketball: MJ previously held a streak of 866 straight double-digit scoring games, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar recorded 787, and Karl Malone recorded of 575 games.
LeBron is such a pass-first superstar,” noted Lakers center Jake LaRavia.
He focuses on playing the sport. He had the opportunity but due to the player he is and his personality off the court, he executed the unselfish play, found Rui and secured the victory.”
Scoring in double figures had typically been an afterthought long before the start of fourth quarters. Throughout his run, he had attained double figures by the start of the fourth on the vast majority of occasions before this game.
Yet two of those rare single-digit games after three periods had happened in the last week: He recorded nine points going into the fourth against Dallas last week, and then had six points going into the fourth versus the Suns earlier in the week.
He succeeded in keep the streak alive against the Suns. The very next outing, it was over – yet he was celebrating anyway.
My focus is to make the correct play. That is instinctive, no matter what,” James declared. If you make the right play, the basketball gods forever returning the favor.”
