Vehicle Fleeing Police Crashes into Tampa Bar, Claiming Four Dead and 11 Injured
An speeding car that was evading law enforcement slammed into a crowded bar early on the weekend, claiming the lives of 4 people and wounding eleven in a vintage district of Florida, known for its nightlife and visitors.
An air surveillance team with the Tampa law enforcement agency spotted the vehicle driving dangerously on a highway at about 12.40am after police said the silver sedan had been observed illegally racing in another neighborhood, as per a law enforcement announcement.
The state highway patrol caught up with the vehicle and attempted to perform a maneuver that entails bumping a back panel of a fleeing car to cause it to spin out, called a pit, but it was ineffective.
Highway patrol officers “disengaged” as the car sped toward the vintage Ybor City district near downtown, local authorities reported. Eventually, the motorist lost control of the vehicle and struck over a dozen individuals near the bar, police said.
Three individuals died at the scene and a fourth person died at a medical facility. As of the next day, a fifth victim was admitted in critical state, and eight other victims were being cared for at area medical centers but were listed as not critical, police said. 2 additional individuals sustained slight injuries and refused treatment at the scene. Every one of the 15 people are grown individuals.
“What happened this morning was a senseless disaster, our hearts are with the loved ones of the deceased and all those who were impacted,” the Tampa police chief said in a statement.
Officers named the suspect as 22-year-old Silas Sampson, who was booked on the weekend and is being held at the local detention facility.
Court records showed the suspect has been charged with 4 charges of vehicular homicide and 4 counts of aggravated fleeing or eluding with severe harm or fatality. All are serious crimes. No attorney was listed for Sampson.
“Our entire city feels this loss,” remarked Tampa’s mayor, previously was Tampa’s initial woman top cop, in a message on online platforms.
“Our condolences are with everyone affected. The investigation into this crash is continuing, and efforts are underway to obtain explanations,” the statement added.
Lately, certain regions and local agencies have pushed to restrict the employment of high-speed vehicle pursuits to safeguard both the public and police. Following a rise in deaths, a recent report funded by the federal authorities recommended law enforcement pursuits to be rarely used, explaining that the risk to individuals, officers and onlookers often outweighs the immediate requirement to take someone into custody.
Still, Florida has intensified efforts on the tactics, with the region’s highway patrol amending its policies to loosen limitations on the use of vehicle pursuits and pit maneuvers. The justice department-backed analysis characterized those tactics as “high-risk” and “debated”.
