Vince Zampella, who helped create the globally famous video game Call of Duty, has died in a traffic collision in Los Angeles, California at the age of 55.

The tragic news was announced by Electronic Arts, the publisher that controls Respawn Entertainment, a game studio he co-founded.

The renowned industry figure died after his automobile collided and was engulfed in flames on a freeway in the Los Angeles area on this past Sunday, US media outlets report.

"This is an unimaginable loss, and our hearts are with Vince's loved ones, his family, and the countless individuals inspired by his legacy," an official with Electronic Arts said.
